Windsor MP Visits Local Lottery Funded
Projects
Adam Afriyie MP spent a busy morning visiting projects
around Windsor which have received Lottery grants. The Big
Lottery Fund supports many charities and good causes across
the constituency including the Volunteer Bureau, Crossroads,
who support carers, and the Tree Wardens Group.
Mr Afriyie met with representatives from Windsor &
Maidenhead Volunteer Centre where they spoke to him about
their lottery funded projects which allow them to train and
recruit volunteers, including those with disabilities.
Speaking after the meeting, Mr Afriyie said “Grants from
the Big Lottery Fund provide much needed support to
voluntary organisations which so often take up the slack
where the state provision is lacking. It’s great to support
your local community through voluntary activities and I’d
encourage those interested to get in touch with the Centre.”
Mr Afriyie then met with tree wardens from Windsor and
Maidenhead Tree Wardens Group in Wraysbury. The group works
with parish councils and local community groups to plant
landmark flowering trees in appropriate places. On this
visit, Mr Afriyie was shown where the Lottery funded tree
had been planted on Wraysbury Green.
Speaking at the visit, Mr Afriyie said,
“We are lucky to live in such a beautiful area and our
local environment is immensely important to us. So I am
delighted that the Big Lottery Fund has supported local tree
wardens in their hard work to maintain and improve the
green.”
Mr Afriyie then visited Windsor and Maidenhead Crossroads
in Smiths Lane, Dedworth, an organisation which provides
support to carers. The organisation has received funding
from the Big Lottery Fund to provide respite care for
carers.
Speaking after the visit, Mr Afriyie said:
“Carers, caring for an elderly or ill relative, often put
that person’s health and welfare before their own and can
suffer as a result. Crossroads supports carers by offering
respite care, as well as organising social events which can
help with the stress and isolation that many carers can
feel.
“It is reassuring to have met Crossroads fundraisers on
several occasions around the constituency. The dedication of
staff and volunteers is tremendous and my thanks go to the
Big Lottery Fund for supplementing their funds in this way.
It is a truly moving project which supports those who care
for others and plugs the gap between social services and the
hospice movement.”
Speaking after his morning of visits Adam Afriyie said,
“The Big Lottery Fund does a great job supporting many
local projects but there is a real danger that the
Government will commandeer lottery funds to plug the hole in
Olympic funding and this could well mean significantly less
money going to good causes up and down the country.”
