Afriyie Says End Tax
Credit Hardship
07-Jun-06, Press Release.
The level of incorrect payment of tax credits has
been revealed in figures released this week. During the
tax year to 2005 more than 14,000 claims were
incorrectly paid across the locality.
In Windsor and Maidenhead there were 1,300 claims
underpaid and 2,700 claims overpaid.
In the Bracknell Forest Unitary Authority area there were
1,400 claims underpaid and 3,100 claims overpaid.
In the Slough Unitary Authority area there were 2,200
claims underpaid and 3,700 claims overpaid.
Adam Afriyie MP said:
“The tax and benefits system is so complicated that even
Government departments find it hard to understand.
“It is time that the whole system was simplified so that
the families most in need of tax credits are not hit in the
pocket by the Government’s errors.”
“I have been contacted by many concerned local residents
and my concern is for the stress and financial uncertainty
caused to them.
“Thousands of families across the Windsor area will have
been badly affected with overpayments they will be forced to
repay from money they have already spent. Yet more families
will not have been given money they were entitled to. It’s a
mess and the Chancellor is the man responsible for it!”
