Wraysbury Accident
Waiting to Happen
22-Sep-06, Windsor Express
Article.
Last week I had an enjoyable Saturday morning
meeting and speaking with residents on the doorsteps of
Wraysbury.
Over the last few years, I have been struck by just how
energetic people can be early on a Saturday morning. Cars
are cleaned, houses decorated, hedges trimmed and children
entertained. People certainly seemed very happy to chat
about the area and their concerns.
Several key issues were raised. One chap had had his
mobile home stolen, another was concerned about the poor
levels of capital expenditure in the area compared to
Maidenhead and several people mentioned the dangers of the
Staines Road. Several deaths and numerous injuries have
occurred on this road in recent years and local residents
have been campaigning for some time for safety measures to
be put in place.
Having contacted the Royal Borough of Windsor and
Maidenhead about residents’ concerns regarding the road
there was some reassurance in April when the council
announced it would make funding available for a road safety
scheme and Thames Valley Police agreed to train residents in
the use of speed indication devices.
The dangers to pedestrians and road users is still a very
real concern. Even last Saturday I found myself
instinctively placing my hand on the shoulder of a fellow
campaigner to ensure that he avoided the path of an oncoming
car - despite the fact that he was on the pavement! I
certainly hope the safety measures promised are put in place
quickly and I shall be watching closely to ensure it is the
case because we cannot afford any more fatalities at this
notorious blackspot. |
I
believe
People are happier
when making their own decisions.
Business is the
engine of the economy that generates our jobs, incomes and
taxes.
Government should
not interfere in our lives beyond protecting and defending
us.
