MPs Demand Action on
Poor Rail Service!
09-Mar-07, Windsor Express
Article.
Travelling by rail to and from Windsor is seldom
a happy experience for me and, judging from my postbag
and doorstep conversations, it is quite clear that most
commuters feel the same.
For some time, I have been campaigning alongside other
Thames Valley MPs for improvements to our train services
which suffer unacceptable delays and overcrowding, whilst
fares are increased above inflation. With this Government
continually urging us to leave our cars at home, it strikes
me that this is unlikely to happen unless there is an
acceptable alternative. Indeed, with the current level of
service for Windsor I understand why some have been forced
to use their cars once again!
I, along with the other Thames Valley MPs, demanded a
meeting with Douglas Alexander, Secretary of State for
Transport, which took place last week. One of the key
concerns, which I raised at the meeting, was that an extra
five or ten minutes added to train journeys into central
London from Windsor can mean the difference between taking
the train and driving, whereas an extra five or ten minutes
added to longer journeys, for example from Cornwall and
Devon, would not make any significant difference to choice
of transport.
One of the most frustrating elements for passengers is
the continual buck passing between Network Rail and First
Great Western. So, the Thames Valley MPs have requested a
joint meeting with the Chief Executives of both
organisations to try to get some positive action instead of
each company just blaming the other.
First Great Western have finally agreed to draft a new
timetable to replace the disastrous December timetable, so
please do continue to keep me informed as to your
experiences so that I can keep the pressure up.
We must continue to fight for improved rail services for
Windsor until we have a service that is reliable,
comfortable and cost-effective for all of us. |

People are happier
when making their own decisions.
Business is the
engine of the economy that generates our jobs, incomes and
taxes.
Government should
not interfere in our lives beyond protecting and defending
us.
